Like old Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca with lashings of Justin Broderick and/or Steve Reich and/or those repetitive Michael Gira bits at the ends of Swans songs thrown in, each piece rises and swells, pulse by pulse, until a giant golem of music encases everything in its shadow and is finally sent off to do the bidding of its master ("go bring me rare records!"). This is virtually a double 10" as each piece seems to have its own charm on 45 or 33. Fat is Phat! )

Well, kids, if you do not already know, the thick textural musings of Mr. Menche are more subtle and moving than those of the average power elctronic bear. Too frequently lumped in with a rather dour lot, Menche, I believe, is often misunderstood as being a darkly obsessed character, and while he does paint in chiaroscuro, his sonic assaults have much more to do with palpability than pulpability. Think of it as being assaulted...with a Pepa. 'Deluge' is actually a surprising departure from previous explorations as the tones are generated by real live instruments (bass guitar, accordian & melodica) as played by a real live Menche.)

Evening recounts the events of a cold October evening when the 10-year-old Lundvall turned to look at the town hall clock, hovering in the darkness like the moon. When he turned back he was shocked to see the silhouette of another woman's face masked against a burning red sky. Her face had no features, only a black void which softly whispered, it's my time of the evening. Leaves is about a ghostly figure Lundvall would see drifting through the park in his hometown each autumn. The male figure usually appeared before or after a rainstorm followed by crows.)
